A Legacy Of Educators Begun

Born1800 - Died1920

Richard Ward Sr.

My great grandfather Richard and his wife Fannie were the parents of 16 children and they were responsible for educating at that time with no public school in their community to help in the early 1800s. They did not have high school themselves but could read and write somewhat. They did not complain because thay didn't have a high school education or thought of the opportunity to attend college. They were adamant about one thing, that their children and grandchildren were going and having the best possible opportunities for their future education... Their grand and great grandchildren would one day go to colleg and become... doctors, lawyers, nurses, preacher, teachers, principals, realtors, gas station and grocery store owners, with a committment to serve their community and fellow-man. Even though my great grandfather Richard did not have a formal public school education, he was a very wise man, a leader and respected in his community, doing everything he could to blaze the trail for his children to have even a better future than his. He taught them relevant life skills through framing and cattle ranching to gain the knowledge necessary to work their way out of the small East Texas country community call Sacul, Texas. Their determination and ambition for us to achieve and accomplish our educational dreams through serving our country in the military, hard work to go to college. Great grandfather Richard lived to be120 years old, he lived to see many of his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren do things he'd only dreamed of.

Rev. Roosevelt Ward

Rev. Roosevelt Ward and wife Equilla Price/ Ward, married and grow up in the Dexter Community and was able to attend the community school in the Methodist Church where her grandfather taugh. Roosevelt, son of the late Richard Ward Jr. and the grandson of Richard Ward Sr., spoken of earlier that lived 120 years. His wife Equilla was a Baptist and Roosevelt was Methodist. He was the smartest, mostly self-educated man I have known and wife Equilla was a writer, publishing two books. When the Lord called Roosevelt to preach, he was a Methodist Pastor for many years in Arkansas and Texas. They have 7 children, the first 2 was born in Arkansas and the other 5 were Texans. As a Methodist Pastor he later attended Texas College in Tyler, Texas in 1941. Rev. Roosevelt Ward, built, organized and Pastored churches in whatever community the Methodist Church would sent him. Somehow, in his latter years he changed and ended up in the Pentecostal Church, serving God's people in Tyler, Texas for over 50 years.
